DOUBLES AND FOURS

G.R.C. FINALS ROWED

The fimjls in two Gisborne Rowing Club events, the T.R. Gordon Doubles and the Executive Fours, were rowed last evening, the double-sculling event being) over a distance of three-quarters of a mile and the four-oar final over the mile course.

In the doubles, the contestants were R. Nicoll, str., and It. Coleman, 6sec., in one boat, and J. Cravvford-Smith, str., and D. Patterson, Bsec., in the other. Cravvford-Smith did not secure much advantage from the concession of 2sec., and at the Ballance street bridge. Nicoll led by about three-quarters of a length. From that stage on the issue did not appear to be in doubt, though CravvfordSmith and his partner made solid efforts to get alongside Nicoll, especially in the last quarter of a mile. Nicoll and Coleman won by half a length. The four-oar event gave M. Burridge his second win of the season, bis crew beating R. Sealy’s by a length and ahnlf. Burridge had with him J. Crawford, D. Watt, and R. Dudfield, while Scaly’s crew comprised L. Scholium, A. Cleaver, and G. Hall, the first-named crew having a decided advantage in weight. From the start Burridge took the lead, and Scaly fought a losing) contest practically throughout the distance, repeatedly sprinting, and finishing with his crew rowed out. Burridge won by a length and a-half.
