SWIMMING

TE PUIA CARNIVAL

The opening carnival being held at the Te Puia Baths on Boxing Day promises to be a great attraction. The entries to date constitute a record for any Coast aquatic carnival, and from Gisborne alone a contingent of approximately 50 swimmers will be making the trip. It should not be surprising to see about 100 'competitors taking part. The leading swimmers will be competing, but how they will compare with some of the unknown swimmers from the coast remains to bo seen.

An excellent programme has been drawn up, providing events for all classes of swimmers. In /addition to the handicap racing, the programme consists of diving, and water polo. The latter event will be something new to a number of Coast enthusiasts, and it is hoped that the result will be the foundation of polo teams on the Coast.

The nine miniature cups donated by New Zealand Breweries, Limited, and tho solid silver challenge cup donated by Mr. D. J. Barry are trophies that are well worth competing for, and their display in Mr. C. E. Brown’s window has caused many complimentary remarks to bo passed. The Gisborne Swimming Club has arranged for a bus to convey competitors to Te Puia, it being timed to leave opposite tho Herald at 8.30 a.m. on Boxing Day. Early application for bus tickets is necessary, and in addition all competitors will need competitors' passes to gain admission at Te Puia. Also, the passes will be necessary for admittance to the competitors’ dining-room. In tho evening a dancj will be hold at Te Puia, which promises to make a splendid finish to the day.
