SHOPLIFTING CHARGE
A £3OO WARDROBE WOMAN REMANDED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. An indication of the big task facing tho police in the investigation of certain shoplifting charges was given in the Police Court, when it was revealed that 20 hours had been occupied in taking statements from an accused woman. Ellen' Marion Mather, 32, a domestic, who was arrested recently, is alleged to have had in her possession goods worth £3OO. The woman’s counsel said that if the police were to bring charges relating to all the goods, the hearing might occupy five days. Some of the clothes represented fashions extending oyer many years. The chief detective said it was obvious that a woman of the accused’s position could not have bought the goods, which included clothes such as were worn by the smartest women in the city. The magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, said he had seen the clothes, and having been a married man for 30 years, appreciated the value of them. The accused was remaned until January 22.
