NOT INADEQUATE

POLICE EQUIPMENT REPLY TO CRITICISM (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this. day. A denial that there is any cause for uneasiness about the equipment of the New Zealand Police Force is made by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. G. Wohlmann, in reply to a telegram sent by Mr. 11. Holland, M.P., asking for information On* the subject. This was the result of a discussion by the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association on the recent remarks of Mr. Justice Herdman. Mr. Wohlmann refers particularly fo the transport facilities available lor the police, and states that in -Christchurch, the axpelisC- of maintaining additional departmental cars would not be warranted. The letter stated • “I can assure you that there is absolutely no cause for uneasiness so far as the equipment of the New Zealand Police Force is concerned. Mr. Justice HerdUian’s remarks at Auckland apparently had reference (o motor transport facilities for the police in that city, where, 1 may state, improvements in the police motor transport are being effected. “In Christchurch, although there is only one departmental car provided’ a! sufficient number of other cars can be made available to officers of the police at short notice to enable them to meet any urgent call for the fast transport of police. “I may add that much of the newspaper comment on this subject is nnmrorffidd and inaccurate, owing, no doubt; to the lack of knowledge of police requirements and resources.”
