Thousands of people thronged the streets of Wanganui on Friday night in anticipation of seeing the famous Grena - dier Guards Band march' along Taupo quay and Victoria avenue. Two Wanganui. Hands, the Garrison and Queen Alexandra’s Own, paraded at. the railway station to meet the New Plymouth express, but there were no Grenadiers. Tall men in mufti occupied carriages at. the rear of the- train, hut without their scarlet 1 tunics and tall hats they fell much below the expectations ot the crowd. Tire, two Wanganui hands marched away at intervals, and lo justify their presence played suitable marches, hut instead of being accompanied bv the band representing the pride of Britain’s Army, they had with them only a. rabble of youngsters.
