AMATEUR ATHLETICS

INTEREST MAINTAINED LAST NIGHT’S MEETING Another large attendance pt the Gisborne Amateur Athletic, and Harrier Club's weekly floodlight meeting at the Childers road reserve last, night was a further indication of the continued interest shown by patrons. The weather conditions were ideal, and those present enjoyed the mild atmosphere. The keenness of the public was increased in last night’s event in view ol the large entries received. Most of the entrants faced the starter, and good lields participated. There were some close finishes, and the night’s sport was lull of interest. The club has been making very great progress lately, and the membership is rapidly increasing.' At present, there are 110 active members on the list. 1 The main attention among the junior cyclists last night was focussed oil the three-mile junior handicap, which was the final distance for tile limes Cup. . The winner of the cup was F. Davis I who, by virtue of his previous wins, had I established himself in a good position. , lie did not win last night’s race. Had Ihe done so, he would have won the ! cup outright by winning all three 'events, lie secured 10 points. G. Sutton, who cycled into second place hi all j three events, was second for the cup with nine points. Last night’s race ' was won by B. Harvey. : National dancing was again featured on Ihe programme, and opportunity was taken to present all prizes won at the floodlight performances this season. There was good competition in each of the dancing classes, and the margin of points in each case was very close. The entries were not so large in the under 13 classes, as a number of the younger dancers have not yet quite mastered the more intricate steps, while in addition a number of the schools were holding Christmas trees last night. In the hornpipe over 13, the points for the first three competitors were 76, 751,, and 75 respectively, another indication that the handicapping has produced keen competition. The planing of the board was greatly appreciated by the competitors. After the presentation of the trophies to the winners during the. floodlight season, an Irish duo was performed by Thelma ! and Margaret Jonasen, and both received a hearty round of applause. Thanks [ were expressed to the athletic club for the interest it. had taken in the dancing and for the trophies donated. Results:— WRESTLING.
