BRITISH UNEMPLOYED INCREASES IN RELIEF NATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY (British Official Wireless.) Bee. 10 a.in. RUGBY, Dec. 13 Substantial increases in the scale ol relief to unemployed and their dependents now on transitional payment will come into force on January 7. . Under the new scheme, which makes unemployment wholly a national charge, local rates vviil be relieved by about £5,000,000. About 1,000,000 poor law applicants and persons receiving transitional benefit, who with their families will number about 4.000,000 people, wilt benefit.
In general, people with families will bo "paid more', and many who have pa children may receive less. Those in low-rental areas may lose, while those in highly-rented towns will gain. The' main provisions are new basic scale payments, allowances for children varying according to age, a sliding scale to .meet special rent payments, a new method of calculating resources and savings, and a revision of the demands on sons and other relatives. The increases, particularly to children, are bigger than had been anticipated.
