COLLAPSE OF FLOOR 500 PEOPLE FALL 40FT. LONDON, Dec. 13. 'While a performer was singing “The Minstrel Boy,” the floor of St. Clement’s School, at Liverpool, collapsed under the weight of 500 people, including children, who fell in a heap to the floor 40ft. below, chairs and benches avalanching through the cavity, causing panic. Some escaped to spread the alarm.
Police and ambulances rushed to the scene. Thirty-six persons were taken to hospital, and it is feared that several will die. Over 100 were medically treated aud sent home.
When the floor collapsed the gaslighted building was plunged into darkness, which intensified the horror, as explosions were feared, but gas company officials rushed to the scene and- cut off the supply. Children, women and men struggled in a heap under the floor, some of them being crushed by desks falling on top of them.
