ADVENTUROUS CLIMB
GUIDE ON NGAURUHOE REMARKABLE EXPERIENCE An adventurous and highly exciting climb to the summit of Mount Ngauruhoe was made by Air. C. Itisberg, a guide and photographer at The Chateau, last Saturday morning. While he was at the summit of the mountain a huge jet of smoke and steam was hurled to a height of several thousands of feet, and boulders thrown from the crater landed within a short distance of him. Mr. Risberg reached the foot ot Mount Ngauruhoe, near the Taina Lakes, at 6.30 a.m., and the volcano then showed very little activity. When he reached the rim of the outer crater, however, an exceedingly interesting, although alarming, spectacle was presented by the inside of the crater, which is about a quarter of a mile across. From a new vent, about 20yds. in diameter, and almost in the centre of the circle made by the walls of the outer crater, a pillar of smoke and steam surged upward. Such was tlie hidden force that impelled it from the depths below the mountain, that the boulders at tbo edge cf the vent were in a continual state of motion, rising several feet, and falling into the vent, only to
be hurled into the air again by the rising vapor. NEW FISSURES APPEAR The interior walls of the outer crater were thickly coated with a jet black substance, which appeared to be soot, white ash lay on the rim of the crater, and the upper portion of the mountain to a depth of several inches. What Mr. Risberg believes to be a new ridge of lava extended across the crater floor. No smoke was issuing from the main interior crater, which is usually most active, but smaller jets of steam were rising from numerous other vents. It is possible that the vent of the largest interior crater lias been blocked by the fall of «rock which was noticed on Wednesday last, causing the formation of a new outlet.
Li several places round the crater walls fissures ’had appeared, and it seemed likely that further falls of rock would occur.
