RECOVERY IN BRITAIN
WONDERFUL ADVANCE SPIRIT OF PROGRESS The wonderful recovery made by Britain and the. optimistic outlook of her people impressed Mr. A. J. Court, ol Auckland, during a, recent three-months' tour of England, Scotland and Wales. Air. Court returned by the Aorangii from Sydney.
Air. Court said the whole atmosphere of Britain was one of progress. Admittedly, the people still had their problems, but one never heard any mention made of depressed times, in his opinion Britain was only waiting for the European countries to settle down again, when she would go ahead with furthei plans for the development of external markets. Most of the manufacturers were busy, and everywhere there was that former hustle and bustle. It was a fact that tlie country had won through, and all she had done, to put herself ahead cm an econmic basis was very reassuring for the future.
Referring to buildings, Air. Court said the number of residences that were being erected in the northern, southern, eastern and western districts of London was amazing. In the course of one afternoon's drive lie had seen at least 1(XX) new buildings, all of the most modern design am! with the latest conveniences. Many of the houses hud been erected in connection with the .scheme for the clearing of the slum areas.
Air. Court praised the Government for its foresight in using public works for the amelioration of unemployment during a time of depression. Millions of pounds had l)c n n exnpnded upon the roads, which Mr. Court said he had found in wonderful condition during a 5000-miles’ motor tour. lie had also been greatly impressed with the many plans that had been devised for the protection of pedestrians. particularly in view of the fact that it was estimated about 180 persons a week were killed in Britain as a result of motor accidents.
