G.R.C. SECOND TRIALS TWO CLOSE RACES Rowing in the Gisborne Rowing Club’s Second Trial Fours scries, over the Taruheru mile course, was continued last evening and two close races eventuated. The committee lequesls all strokes to sco that races are rowed to the .schedule Set out on the notice-board, thereby obviating the risk of any congestion on the following day. As an example, of t he four races set down to be rowed last night only two were decided, leaving a carry-over of two, which makes six to be decided to-day. In the first race J. Malcolinson, sir., L. Oldiiig, V. Hay, and R. Cedmvall beat B. LeCompte, sir.. J. Zachariah, W. Owen and T. Lewis. LeCompte took the lead from the start and had a length on Malcolinson at Roebuck road 1 bridge. This lead was unchanged throughout the next half-mile, and with both crews rowing stroke for stroke LcCompto’s chances looked very bright. Malcolinson gradually began to draw up approaching the Derby street bridge, however, reducing his opponent’s lead to a canvas, and in the final sprint he went ahead to win by a canvas. The next race, between K. Bell, str., L. iSeboliuin, L. Cowan, and -J. Montgomery, bow, ami 11. Hankcy, str.. J. Crawford-fsmith, C. Davy, and Don Muir, was also a close one. At the start both crews left, the mark together, but after 100yds. Bell began to draw away, and at Roebuck road bridge lie bad an advantage of three-quarters of a length. Bell maintained his lead to the Derby street bridge, when Hankcy sprinted, and in the ensuing struggle Bell prevailed by a bare canvas. Racing in this series will be continued this evening. In the row-off between the respective winners of the Thursday and .Saturday afternoon sculling competitions, which are contested over half-a-mile, I’. Gavin beat D. Robertson. At the conclusion of this race Mr. K. A. Woodward presented Gavin with the competition cup, “The Pride of tlie TaruheVu,” to lie held by him until the completion of the next scries. POVERTY RAY CLUB FIRST FOURS SEMI-FINAL The semi-final of the Poverty Bay Rowing Club’s First Trial Fours series was rowed on the Waimata course. last evening.

The crews were:—J. Barrett, str., J. Packman, A. Richardson, and P. McMahon, and R. J. Patty, str., W. Higgs, W. Patty, and V. Butler. Barrett took the lead at the start, and after the first 100yds. had an advantage of threequarters of a length. This position was unchanged until nearing Kaiti bridge, Patty banging on well. From then on, however, Barrett gradually increased bis lead, and won comfortably with a good dear-water margin.

The final of the series will be rowed at 5.30 o’clock this evening, over the same, course, when a good contest is anticipated between the crews stroked by J. Barrett and W. McLeod rcspectivelv.
