REAY BRIDGE NEWS

WEEKEND CRICKET EEAY BRIDGE V. MA.TAWIIERO (Herald Correspondent.) After being 21 runs behind on the first innings, Reay Bridge managed to secure their first victory of the season by defeating Matuwhero by six wickets after a very exciting game at the week-end. Matawliero were dismissed for 47 runs, Rex Grayson being tho only batsman to reach double figures. After making 23 runs he skied a delivery from T. A. Field, Reay Bridge’s slow left-hander, and was caught by the wicket-keeper, G. Spence. Smith contributed eight and Dunstan seven. D. Wilson took three wickets for eight runs, E. Wyke_s one for three, Honan two for seven, T. A. Field two for nine, and R. Field two for 18.

Reay Bridge’s first innings was a procession, the whole side being dismissed for 26 runs. Clarkson and Grayson were the destroying elements. The former took six wickets for 10 runs, and the latter four for eight. Malawherb could only score 50 runs on their second visit to the crease. Peddle top-scored with 15, including three fours, and had hard luck in being out through a hard return to the bowler, lionah taluug a fine catch. -Matawhcro’s luck was right out, and they coukl do nothing right. Peddle was out to a slow long hop, another player was howled off his pads by a ball that was almost a wide, a third was hit on the chin, the ball falling on the wicket, and a fourth retired hurt, but was able to resume later. Honan took seven wickets for 19 runs' and Spence three for 10. Requiring .52 runs for Reay Bridge started badly again, two wickets falling to Clarkson cheaply. A fine partnership between F. Parker and R. Honan put a different complexion on the game, udding 25 runs to the score. G. Parker, the MaUwhero skipper, kept ringing on the 1 changes <in the howling and the batsmen had to earn every run, only one boundary being hit. Peddle, Clarkson, Grayson. Fisken, and G. Parker all howled splendidly. Fisken bowled F. Parker, and E. Wyk.es in the same over, hut R. IToiian was then joined by R. Field, and amidst excitement the necessary runs were secured. F. Parker scored 11, R. Honan, not out, 22, and R. Field, not out, 8, Fisken secured two wickets for five runs and Clarkson two for 20. Peddle bowled five overs for four runs and was always troublesome. Grayson.and Clarkson bowled effectively, while, assisted by the wind, but were not so consistent when the breeze died down. Both sides fielded well, Peddle for Matawhcro being especially brilliant. Tho lack of good slip fieldsmen was very noticeable on both sides. Sonic of the younger men of'both teams shaped very promisingly and should develop into useful players.
