WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
OTOKO MEETING Tho Otoko Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting last Saturday, the weather being most favorable. There was the largest attendance of members to date. Two new members, the Misses McMillan, were enrolled. Miss Francis was a visitor from Gisborne. The two delegates to the Wairoa meeting, Mesdames limes and Honey, reported an enjoyable trip and gave a comprehensive account of the business.
The institute is organising a flower show for November 10, arid all members are willingly co-operating. Mr. Edward Thompson has been appointed secretary for the show. Flags were received from the.St. John Ambulance, and it is promised that these will soon be exchanged for donations to help the worthy activities. Mrs. 11. limes has donated a handsome. sugar bowl for institute use. The roll call, uses of a lemon or a garden hint, brought forth many useful suggestions. It was mentioned that lemon inice and salt will take mildew or rust stains from linen and that a table, spoonful of alum dissolved in a quart of water will keep slugs off small plants. The competition, a vase of spring flowers, brought in 20 entries, the best of which was Mrs. Times’ vase of ranunculus, while Mrs. Austin’s coral bell was voted second.
Mrs. Cooper gave an able demonstration on knitting a round cushion, which, it could be seen, was ideally suited for everyday use. Numerous entries were received for the A. and P. Show and the eight that were selected left out some beautiful works of art.
A demonstration on tatting will be given at the next meeting. Tea and social chat and the singing of the National Anthem closed an interesting meeting, the hostesses for which wore Mesdames Richmond and Thompson.
