INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS
HILL COUNTRY CUPS MATAWAI GATHERING (Herald Correspondent.) Tho annual inter-school sports for competition for the Poverty Bay hills schools cups were held on the spacious Matawai School grounds on Saturday. The following schools participated:— Matawai, Alotu, Otoko, grouped witli Rakauroa and Karetu, and Motuhora, grouped with Whakarau and Homebrook. There was an excellent attendance of parents and local residents, who barracked enthusiastically for their rospec live teams.
Basketball. —Homebrook 0 v. Motu 18; Otoko 2 v. Matawai 7; Homebrook ov. Otoko 8; Otoko 0 v. Motu 3; Matawai 9 v. Homobrook 2; Matawai 1 v. Alotu 8. Motu won the cup. Tho reforeos were Misses 11. Lovell-Smith, E. Innes. and S. McKenzie. Football.—Otoko 3 v. Matawai 5; Motuhora 0 v. Motu 20; Motuhora 0 v. Otoko 14; Otoko 0 v. Moiu 11; Matawai 3 v. Motu 0; Matawai B 26 v. Motuhora B 0; Matawai A 22 v. Homebrook 0. The referees were Alessrs. B. Ogg, H. Ashdown, and A. Webb. Matawai won the cup Relay race.—Girls: Motu 1 ■ Otoko, 2; Matawai, 3.. Boys: Motu, 1; Matawai, 2; Otoko, 3. Tho pupils taking part in this section were:—Motu: Girls, B. Fisher, E, Carron, U. Reid, and J. Twistleton; boys, Jackson, Hooper, Ilitt, Hargreaves, and McClincliie. Alatawai: Girls, R. Nelson, E. Scholium, B. Daven?ort, and M. McClinchio; boys, E. edersen, G. Ashdown, C. Caicott, and R. Kerikeri. Motuhora: Girls, M. Derecourt, J. Boys, P. Henderson, and M. White. Boys, R. Davis, R, Henderson,
A!. Anderson and D. AlcPherson. Otoko: Boys, Richardson, D. Cox, F. Sherriff, and K. Wenham; girls, 11. Redpath, 1. Richardson, R. Cox, and V. McKay. Tho families from outside centres had picnic lunches, and afternoon tea was provided by Alatawai parents, Mrs. G. R. Robb taking charge. Mr. 11. F. Gordon, Malawai’s popular headmaster, blew the whistle, and when the children re-assembled at the conclusion of the sports, Mr. W. J. Reid expressed thanks on behalf of the visitors for the pleasant day they had spent, and congratulated the Alotu basketball team on winning the cup, calling on the captain, Miss Betty Hutchins, to accept it. Mr. Reid then called on the captain of the Alatawai football team, Alaster Clive Ashdown, to whom he presented the football cup, which had been wrested front Motuhora School, last year’s winner.
