TE KARAKA OPENING . MANY VISITORS FROM TOWN The Te Karaka Bowling Club officially opened its season on Saturday, when there was a large gathering, including many bowlers from Gisborne. Fine weather prevailed, and the green was in perfect order. During the interval just before afternoon tea, the president of the club, Mr. John Wilson, was introduced by Mr. \\ . Greggan. Mr. Wilson welcomed the visitors, and expressed pleasure at seeing so many present. Mr. Greggan then thanked all helpers who had maintained the condition o! the green so excellently during the winter, and specially referred to the work of Mr. Keane. lie concluded by extending a hearty invitation to all bowlers to visit Te Karaka green, where they would be given a welcome at any time. The lighting facilities enabled play to be carried out during the evenings, and Te Karaka bowlers found this a great benefit.

Visiting bowlers .responded. Mr. B. Power spoke on behalf of the GisborneEast Coast Bowling Centre, and referred to the series of centre competitions. which would bring country clubs for the first time mto active participation.

Other speakers were:—Messrs. A. Slight (Poverty Bay), Rothwell (Kahutia), J. W. H. Holmes (Gisborne), and Williams (Patutahi). A telegram of apology for not being able to bo represented was received from the Wairoa Bowling Club. Miss Wilson then rolled up kitty, followed by a splendid drawing shot,, and the green was declared open for the season.

KAHUTIA CLUB MASONIC CUP FOURS On Saturday afternoon a, good number of bowlers attended for a game on the Kahutia green. The first round of the Masonic Cup Fours was played, with the following results: — N. Bayne, T. Holt, R. Campbell, and R. Morse (s) 27 v. W. Neenan, W. Jackson, C. Corbett, and R. Jenkins (s) 20. Jenkins’ team obtained an early lead of s—o, but Morse’s rink soon overhauled him and eventually led 20—*-5, the game being 27—14 with'two heads to go. If. Robinson, A. Wood, J. Walker and P. Smith (s) 25 v. H. W. Thompson, W. John, C. E. Robinson and G. Downey (s) 19. Smith’s team took the first head with a two, but Downey’s rink scored on the next five heads to 1 lead 12 to two on the sixth. Smith’s rink made up the leeway and on the fifteenth head the scores were equalised at 15-all. On the eighteenth the scores were 19-all, but the remaining two heads were taken by Smith’s rink, who finished six points in the lead. —Friendly Games— E. Solvander, P. Mcllroy and J. POVERTY BAY CLUB Although conditions were difficult for bowls on Saturday afternoon on account of the strong westerly breeze, the games played on the Poverty Bay Bowling Club’s green were noticeable for their keenness and even scoring. The Saturday Ferns and Buttons which have been a. feature of the Saturday play during the “close” season, again provided a good coutest. The results of the afternoon’s games were as under: — —Ferns— G. J. Robertson and D. G. Robertson 21 v. Wood and Hughes 19. —Buttons — Stevens and Smith 23 v. Members of the club are reminded that entries for the various competitions must be handed in by Saturday next. They are reminded also that the ballot lor skips closes on the same day.
