(Herald Correspondent.) A pack oi' three dogs is reported to be doing considerable damage among sheep. Several settlers have been out after the dogs, but so far without effect. The Power Board revenue for the past month totalled £2156, the chief items being retail consumers, £622; power accounts, £1455; goods and services, £52; time payment instalments, £23. With a view to assisting motorists in regal'd to headlights, some officers of the Hawke's Bay and Auckland Automobile Associations will visit Wait'oa on Wednesday and Thursday to test- lights, the county council yards in Queen street being the rendezvous. The Power Board accounts passed at last meeting totalled £1269, including £652 on power account, and £617 on loan account. There is a debit balance of £923 in the power account, and a credit of £3B in the loan account. The ladies’ guild of St. Andrew’s Church will hold the first of a series of gatherings in St. Andrew’s Church hall on Wednesday. The Mahia Ladies’ Club held an enjoyable function in Kaiuku Hall last Thursday iu aid of the new club-room funds. Some of the competitions created a good deal of merriment. The prizewinners were:—Spot waltz : Miss Kongo and Mr. G. Kereru. Statue waltz: Miss Winno Neville and Mr. T. Campbell. Monte Carlo waltz: Miss L. Main and Mr. S. Pratt. Mr. L. Wyllie was the winner of a special competition. Musical items were also given. It is anticipated that there will be keen competition for the work of reconstructing the damaged portion of the freezing works. There will probably he several sub-contracts. The tenders close on Thursday. The annual meeting of the Wairoa County Council to elect a chairman and to transact general statutory business will bo held at noon on May 23, and that of the Power Board on May 28 at 10 a.m. The finance committee of the Power Board is to hold an important meeting on Thursday morning. Only practice matches are to lie played on the basketball courts on Wednesday, as follows:—Redwing v. Rovers, 2.15 p.m., High School ground; Convent Old Girls v. Ex-High, 3 p.m., same court. Saturday’s football did not draw a large crowd, the weather of the past few days having dispirited a good many of the football “fans.” Old Boys defeated Pirates by six points to five after a good clean but hard game. Whakaki, playing at Mahia, scored a runaway victory over the home team by 32 to 8. Tapuae was beaten by Nuliaka to the tune of 8 to nil. In the junior grade, Waikaremoana and Oid Boys played a drawn game, 8-all. United, playing at Frasertown, also drew, 8-all. In the third grade, Old Boys 16 beat Pirates 8. One of the latter team was ordered off. Messrs. G. C. Ormond, W. Tait and C. V. Chamberlain were all absent unavoidably from the Power Board meeting on Monday.— Mr. J. Reid, North Clyde, has had to leave suddenly for Taradale owing to the serious illness of his father. -Mr. Ruru Williams, a former Wairoa resident, is visiting here—Dr. T. L. Paget, inspector of maternity hospitals, is visiting the district to confer with the Hospital Board on the question of providing maternity facilities in this district, a matter which is considered to he very serious at present. —Mrs. Crane, Pahiatua, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Hall. The engagement is announced of Clare, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Coker, North Clyde, to Donald Hector, second son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Withers, of Ilawera. The announcement is a very popular one. Arrangements have been made for a dinner to be held for the Minister of Lands, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, at the Wairoa Hotel on Thursday evening, and afterwards deputations are to bo heard at the Borough Council chambers. On Friday morning, the Minister will pay visits to various parts of the district, and will leave after lunch for the south.
