LAST NIGHT’S MEETING RECORD ATTENDANCE BAILORS RUN WELL At the Childers road reserve last night the Gisborne Amateur Athletic und Harrier Club held a most successful floodlight sports meeting, and, in the opinion of officials, the attendance was the largest that had been seen at one of the club’s meetings. The course was well lit, the brilliant moonlight adding to the illumination of the grounds, and a very enjoyable evening’s entertainment resulted. As a result of the hard work of the officials, the programme was carried through without a hitch, for which they are to he commended. The Rifles Band attended the gathering und at intervals played some pleasing numbers. Considerable interest was displayed by the spectators in the naval races, and the warship’s athletes showed good form, covering ttie 100yds in 10 4-sscc. and the 440yds id 59 2-ssec. No records were broken, but G. Quinn succeeded in equalling the best Poverty Bay time in the 100, yds championship. The spectators were disappointed when P. Ryan failed to equal the record for the high jump. A wrestling bout was included in the programme. The wrestlers were Reed and C. Fla,vell. AUSTRALIANS IMPRESS INVERCARGILL MEETING (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL,, last night. The Australian athletes competed, at a meeting here this evening, 1200 spectators coming away thoroughly satisfied with the brilliant running of T. Ei. Mampson and the prowess of J. P. Metcalfe as a jumper, while E. Barwick, though beaton by J. J. Morris, a promising Dunedin runner, in a fast mile, showed that he is returning to the form which won him such a high placo in distance running in Australia. The track was in excellent order, but slightly on the heavy side. Hampson maintained his unbeaten record in New Zealand by winning, with comparative ease, the,- TOOyds. and 220yds. handicaps, the former in tho very fine time of 10 l-ssee., and ilio latter in tho oven better time of 22soe. His time for the furlong is* the fastest ho has recorded on his present tour and only 2-ssec. outside his best. Metcalfe delighted tho crowd with a magnificent jump of 6ft. 3in. and by clearing 47ft. Bin. in tho hop, stop and jump and 22ft. Sin. in the broad jump and by putting the shot 36ft. lOin. he showed what a splendid performer he Is. J. ,J. Morris, of the Davcrsham Club, ran the fastest mile of his career to beat Barwick. Both starting from scratch, it was a most spectacular mile, with Barwick, Morris and E. Johnston (Waikouaiti) tho three scratch men, never fay apart and having tiro last lap to themselves. Two hundred yards from home Morris took the. lead and withstood Warwick’s challenge to win in 4mm. 25 i-ssec'.
