AUSTRALIAN DEFENCES
CANBERRA. Nov. IS. In the House of Representatives a lively debate took place on the defence estimates for 1933-34, amounting to £3,522,820. Some speakers considered the amount inadequate, and several references were made to the unsatisfactory state of the defences. Mr. Harrison, a former commandant of Dmitroon Military College, advocated a 10-year plan of defence development. Australia, he said, must build up a force so strong that it would be too costly for any country to attack her. Mr. W. M. Hughes declared that Australia had never been in such danger of attack, nor so ill prepared lo resist attacks. Several Labor members opposed increased armaments, hut an amendment, moved bv one of them was negatived hv -I f to .12.
