WHALING INDUSTRY
ADEQUATE CONTROL SOUGHT AUSTRALIAN PLANS CANBEPuRA, Nov. 16. Plans for safeguarding the whaling industry by preventing the extermination of whales in the Australian portion of tho Antarctic are being considered by the Federal Government. The Attorney-General, Mr. Latham, said to-day that, while the adequate control of whaling in the Antarctic was highly necessary, tho problem was one of considerable complexity. So far, winding operations were confined to British and Norwegian vessels. For the protection of the industry, a limit had been placed on tlie catch, but certain whaling organisations had so far declined to recognise this limit. For the economic conduct of the industry it was necessary also that the destruction of whale calves should he suppressed. The Federal Ministry, added -Mr. Latham, was considering the making or regulations for the control of the industry in Antarctic waters under its jurisdiction. Probably the most effective method of dealing with the situation would he for the despatch of a cesser from Australia to police the industry. The cost would be heavy, and it was doubtful whether Australia should he expected to meet the whole cost.
