BARREL AND BOTTLE
NEW LIFE FOR COOPERAGES EDINBURGH, Oct. 18. Scotch barrel and bottle manufacturers are experiencing a big boom in anticipation of the United States “falling off the water wagon.” Large purchases of Scotch whisky by American concerns in readiness for the expected repeal have resulted in big orders for barrels and glass bottles for shipping liquor to the United States. These orders have come as a life-saver to cooperage plants, whose existence has been threatened by tlie whisky slump and a big decrease in herring exports. Some cooperages even have gone out of business, but a number are being reopened to deal with the rush of work. The bottle-making industry, too, ‘lias been given a new lease of life, because the growing popularity of cardboard containers has caused a, big slump in the glass bottle trade.
