WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

PUHA HEFTING (Herald Correspondent.) The November meeting of the Puha Women's Institute took place in the Puha Hall, Mrs. J. Graham presiding over a good attendance of members. Invitations were received from the To Karaka and Whatututu institutes to their birthday meetings. Arrangements were finalised for the holding of a Christmas tree for the children of the district next month. The roll-call, a gift suitable for the Christmas tree, brought forth a varied collection. At the sales table the mystery parcels realised a fair sum. The competition, the best plate of pikelets, was won by Mrs. Mooney, Airs. 11. D. Dymock gaining second place. Air. Birkett, Gisborne, gave a very interesting and instructive demonstration of the use of the appliances of Iho Singer sewing machine, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Afrs. Dymock. An enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close by singing “God Save the King.” The hostesses were Aliss Sefton and Airs. Thompson. Several car loads of institute members visited the To Karaka and Wliatatutu birthday parties, and thoroughly enjoyed both outings. WHATATUTU MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Whatatutu Women’s Institute was held at the institute rooms on Friday, November 1.7. It being the institute’s third birthday, the attendance was augmented bv visitors from Puha and To, Karaka, 51 being) present. Bouquets were presented to the president and secretary from Puha and To Karaka institutes. The roll call, humorous happenings, resulted in quite a number of amusing stories being told. The competition, something made from a flour bag, was won by Mrs. Cahill, with a dainty little frock, beautifully smocked, Airs, Murray being second, and Mesdames Shaw and Cleaver, equal, third. During the afternoon two competitions were hold, one, kitchen utensils, being won by Airs. Barroii. and for the other, biscuits, .Mesdames Barron and Cleaver were equal, first. A monologue given by Afrs. lln 11, a visiting inemlier from Tulin, was excellently rendered, and called forth much nnplause. A humorous monologue by Airs. Cahill, “The Joke," was received with much laughter. During the afternoon community singing was indulged in, and a pianoforte duet by Mesdames Shaw and MacKinnon was greatly appreciated. A dainty afternoon tea was served by Alesdames Greaves, Gribble and Gaukrodger, during which the birthday cake — made by Mrs. Moore, and iced by Mrs. Greaves —was cut and banded round. At flic close of the afternoon the Puha and To Karaka representatives thanked the institute for the afternoon, expressing tho hope that' many more birthdays might be celebrated, and concluded by singing “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows.” The meeting terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
