(Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa County Council is to meet at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8, the finance committee, CTs. F, H. Norris and J. Tait, meeting half an hour earlier. Mr. C. A. C. Hyde, of Messrs. McCulloch, Butler and Spence and formerly of Wairoa, was in Wairoa on Wednesday. The monthly meeting of the council of the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce was held on Wednesday night at the office of Messrs. McCulloch, Butler and Spence. There were present: Messrs. A. J. Steed, president, S. M. Ashburn, R. S. Herbert, R. H. Thompson, W. Clark, and D. Byford. The president reported that the chamber’s effort to iiave the examinations for book-keeping, typing and shorthand held in Wairoa were successful, and the examinations would be held about the end of November. There were six entries now, instead of only one at first. All the arrangements had been made locally for free supervision, but as soon as thev could record 10 or more entries the Wellington chamber would pay the supervisors. The result was, he said, very satisfactory, and the certificate of the chamber would go a long way to secure positions for the young people, especially ; f they had to go far afield. The Borough Council advised that the telephone box at North Clyde was in a langerous position, and suggested that i,he chamber should ask the Post and Telegraph Department to shift it to a safer site. The president said he understood the point at issue was who should pay for the cost of shifting. Mr.. By ford said that should not be the point at all. The cost was nothing in view of the possible danger to life. Mr. Ashburn moved, and Mr. Herbert seconded, I “That a letter be sent to the Post and Telegraph Department and the Main Highways Board drawing attention to the dangerous position of the telephone box at the corner of Carroll street and River parade, and pointing out that motorists entering the parade had to pull out on the wrong side of the street to I get a view of the bridge-end, The' motion was carried. On the motion of Mr. Thompson, seconded by Mr. Byford, I it was decided to write to the Borough Council drawing attention to the very bad state of the road leading to the, railway yard goods shed, which was' much used bv heavy traffic. The next ■ meeting will be the first of the quarterly sessions, and will be held on Wednesday, December 6
