EMPTY CITY COFFERS
NEW YORK'S PLIGHT ASSISTANCE BY BANKS NEW YORK, Nov. 1. The city has once again been saved from acute financial embarrassment and inability to meet the city pay roll, when backers, under a financing agreement, to-day put £5,000,000 at tho comptroller ; s disposal. Thirty-seven banks supplied the money at 4 per cent., preventing the non-payment of teachers, hospital staff, and police, who, recently, have more than once been faced by empty city coffers.
