Hughes lias been prominent speaking and organising the Citizens’ Defence League to arouse people to a proper appreciation of the danger in the event of an international blaze developing. The military authorities favor a voluntary scheme as opposedto a compulsory one. Country units under the compulsory system, dropped by the Scullin Government in 1929, are now being revived on a voluntary basis, members enlisting readily and preparing for' terms of training with existing city forces.
