AROUSING THE PUBLIC HUGHES ON THE WARPATH (Received September 13, noon.) SYDNEY, Sept, 13. Australian defence necessities have loomed large lately in the public eye. Mr. W. M. Hughes lias been prominent speaking and organising the Citizens’ Defence League to arouse people to a proper appreciation of the danger in the event of an international blaze developing. The military authorities favor a voluntary scheme as opposedto a compulsory one. Country units under the compulsory system, dropped by the Scullin Government in 1929, are now being revived on a voluntary basis, members enlisting readily and preparing for' terms of training with existing city forces.
