DECORATIVE SUGGESTIONS At the forthcoming Chrysanthemum Show, to be held by the Poverty Bay Horticultural. Society, perhaps next to the display of special exhibition blooms the major feature will be the decorative classes. These classes are always most conspicuous and interesting!, and a few; hints on decorative work in general may not go amiss with those who propose to enter in . this section. The first consideration is to make the exhibit pleasing to the eye, not only in harmony of colors, but in graceful staging. The endeavor should be made to give the exhibit a loose natural effect, letting each flower's beauty stand out and become apparent. The exhibitor should avoid doubtful blendings, always remembering that no arrangement, no matter how graceful, is at all natural or advisable if the colors do not harmonise. If two shades of blooms are used, the flowers should be in the right proportion, so that the blend will be balanced, with each color visible from any angle, and no one color predominating. The object must be to give a pleasing and balanced effect, and the exhibitor should remember not to overcrowd the blooms, or to seek a light effect with flowers and foliage. lightness cannot bo simulated with heavy flowers such as chrysanthemums. Some people prefer decorative work in single colors, but blended effects are more generally popular, and in fact there are no better blends to be desired than those available) in the range of autumn shades.; There, is certainly the promise of some very attractive decorative work in connection with the forthcoming show, and Gisborne enthusiasts in horticulture, and Indeed all lovers of color and balance, should have a treat in store for them. Entries for all sections will close on j Tirarsday at Mr. A. Thomson’s shop, I and it is expected that they will constitute a record for the society.
