BY FOOT TO ROME
ANCIENT CUSTOM PILGRIMAGE STARTING AGAIN VATICAN CITY, Feb. 15. There arc signs that the. ancient custom of making pilgrimages to Rome on foot will be revived when the new Holy Year opens next April. Already, a young Chinese teacher, who was trained in a monastery in China, has walked all the way here in order to seo the Pope and participate in Holy Year ceremonies. Now Don Oriona, founder and general superior of the Congregation of the Sons of Divine Providence, which is very active in North Italy, lias given permission for a large company of his priests and laymen to walk to Romo from Piedmont, Lombardy, and Vonetitt, distances averaging from 370 to 500, miles. Many other religious communities and associations are planning to do the same thing. In the old days nearly all pilgrims walked to Romo, and encountered many perils on the way; but the custom has been in abeyance for many years, except in a few cases of pious peasants living in Spain and the Near East. *
