BLOW FROM THE POPE
NO TREATY WITH REICH PREFERENCE FOR STATES (Received April 15, 11 a.m.) LONDON, April 14. The Daily Mail’s Rome correspondent says the Pope, in receiving Herr von Papon and Captain Gocring, refused the Vatican’s support for the reformation of the German Catholic -Centre Party on a different basis enabling it to support Herr Hitler’s Government. He also declined to conclude a general concordat with the German lieieh as a whole replacing three existing ones with Prussia, Bavaria, and Baden, saying that the Vatican prefers to maintain separate relations with the German States rather than with the central Government.
