THE GERMAN SITUATION BRITISH STATESMAN’S WARNING (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) LONDON, April 14. In the course of a speech, Sir Austen Cliamberiain made a trenchant attack on Germany. He said: —"Frankly, I view the present situation in Europe with grave anxiety. I cannot pretend to conceal the. state of uncertainty in which the world has been left concerning what was actually proposed or agreed to at Rome. What passed in Germany seems to me to render this a singularly inopportune moment to talk about a revision of treaties.’’

Amid cheers, Sir Austen, asked: ‘‘What is this new spirit of German nationalism? It is the worst of the old Prussian Imperialism 'with added savagery, pride, and exclusiveness. No subject not of pure Nordic birth will have equal rights of citizenship in the nation to which they belong. Are you going to discuss revision with a Government like that? (Loud cheers.) "Will you dare put another pole uiider the wheel of such a Government? As long as Germany is affected by this narrow exclusive spirit which says it is a crime to be in favor of peace, and a crime to be a Jew, that is not a Germany to which we can afford to make concessions. Before you can disarm, or urge others to disarm you must see a Germany whose mind has turned to peace, and who will use her equality of status not to menace the safety of others.”

Mr. Winston Churchill said that so surely as Germany acquired military equality while her grievances were unredressed, while she wa s in her present temper, so surely would we be within a measureable distance of a renewal of ageneral European war. A number of prominent Jewish professors at German universities, including the economist, Professor Bonn, and also Herr Kelson, have been granted leave of absence, which is tantamount to dismissal. All professors and teachers at universities aud high schools will be given a questionnaire calculated 'to reveal whether they are purely of Aryan origin. Otherwise they will be' dismissed;

The German Press Association has expelled .Tews and Marxists. A Munich message states that Nazis shot three Communists dead and wounded a fourth while attempting to escape from Dachan concentration camp. The police characterise the killing of Dr. Weiner, a well-known Jewish lawyer, as a deed of blood which must be cleared up for the sake of Germany’s good name. Storm Troops deny knowledge of the affair.

Following his arrest on charges of a a breach of trust, the assistant burgomaster at Dusseldorf hanged himself in his cell. The Nazis arrested the chief burgomaster, Herr Lehr, on a similar charge.
