ROWING

G.E.C. PRESIDENT’S POURS FIRST ROUND PROGRESS Two good races in the Gisborne Rowing Club's four-oar series for the president’s trophies were rowed last evening on the Waimata River 'course, where tidal conditions were better than on the Tai'uheru. The winning crews were those stroked by A. G. Lentell and D. Alexander respectively, neither of whom had easy races. A coincidence was that both the beaten crews suffered minor mishaps at the start, but managed to pull up well and were able to put up hard races despite their initial disadvantages. in the first event of the evening, A. (I. Lentell (str.), J. Zachuriah, Dudley and Sinclair had a slight lead on H. Hunter (str.), McCallum, OrawfordSmith and Hall, and before the boats had covered half a furlong an oar in Hunter’s boat slipped through the poppet, checking the crew badly. Lentell took the weight off and waited on his opponents, who quickly recovered and went on to tussle out a good race. At the William i’ettie bridge a length and a-half separated the boats, and Hunter spurted repeatedly, lessening the distance, but being unable to get on even terms. There was still a length between the boats at the finish.

In the other event, K. Bell (str.), Anderson, Malcolmson, and Fenn suffered a check at the start in practically the same manner as Hunter’s crew. The boat in consequence was slow to move off the mark, and D. Alexander (str.), \Veatherley, Bruce and McLean quickly set up a lead ,of over a length. Bell chased tliem hard over the full course, and Alexander was extended to win by a shade over a length. The series will be continued this evening, when A. F. Allen will row It. Bait, and It. DeCosta meets A. Layton. One race in tlse second round also will he rowed, if the conditions are favorable.

POVERTY BAY CLUB DRAW FOR PRESIDENT’S POURS Nine crews will contest the Poverty Bay Bowing Club’s President’s Fours series, and a start will be made to-mor-row evening with an elimination event, reducing the number of crews to eight, and so ensuring a regular series of contests in the subsequent rounds. J. Barrnett and S. Ovenden will race to-mor-row, and the winner will meet J. McCarthy in the second round. Other second-round engagements will comprise : Jl. Linstroin v. W.. McLeod, R. Stevenson v. J. Webb, K. McLeod v. S. Franks. Ail races in the second round will be rowed on Friday, and the semi-finals will take place on Saturday, concurrently with those of the Gisborne club. The crews have put in solid training for this event, in connection with which the Miller Inter-club Cup competition will be decided, the final races in the latter competition being set down for Tuesday evening.
