“RED JOCKEY'S CARD”
LOTTERY EXPOSED PRINCIPALS FINED £9O (Por Press Association.) CHRiSTCHURCH, this day. Many points concerning the “Red .Jockey's Card" lottery were revealed before the magistrate, Mr E. I). Mosley, this morning. Frederick Ronald Beale, alias “Nippy" Beale, 31), an agent and salesman, was charged with establishing* the lottery on ,October 31, and was fined £SO and costs.
Hugh O’Connor, 37, a land salesman, charged with assisting in the conduct of -the lottery, was fined £4O and costs. Both pleaded guilty after the evidence had been heard.
'The police described how tho lottery was conducted before each race meeting. A list of jockeys likely to bo riding was printed, a great deal of i.t by guesswork. Each jacked was allotted a number, and three numbers were each marked off on every card. Tickets were sold and the persons holding the tickets with the numbers of the jockeys who had most points at the meeting were entitled to a 'prize, it might be that in the present case there was a take-down, as threats were made to the holder of the winning ticket. •Counsel for the accused denied that the scheme was a take-down. There was a suggestion, he said, that a ticket had been altered.
