SECRETARY’S RETIREMENT (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON", this day. Mr. F. (j. Matthews, private secretary to the lion. J. (t. Goldie, Minister of Justice for the past four years, has retired on superannuation. Mr. Matthews has been 35 years in the Public Service, and is one ol: the best-known members of the secretarial corps. He was private secretary to Mr. Richard Seddon, Sir Joseph Ward, Sir William Ilall-Jones, Sir James Allen, and the linn. W. Downie Stewart in the Reform administration. In 1917-18, Mr. Matthews served with the Canterbury Regiment, and was 'collector of customs and taxes in Western Samoa in 1923.
