THE WHEAT PROBLEM
AUSTRALIAN CRISIS WORLD CONFERENCE PLAN (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Received Nov. 30, noon) CANBERRA, Nov. 30. Concern is felt by the Government at tile possibility of defeat in the Senate on proposals for assistance to the wheat industry. The Cabinet, in spite of much hostile opposition, decided to adhere firmly to the proposal that £2,000,000 should he paid to States on the basis of last year’s production figures, and that it must bu distributed solely for the benefit of necessitous growers. The Government, under no circumstances, will allow it to be paid out in the form of a bounty. The Government’s decisions will he challenged by the Country Party, and a critical position will thus he created. MELBOURNE, Nov. 30.
Following a conference of the Victorian Wheat Pool and the consul for Argentine, it was decided that steps should he taken to bring about a conference in London of the four leading world wheat exporting countries, Canada, America, Argentine, and Australia, to restrict- the acreage.
