(Herald Correspondent.) The Matakaoa Women’s Institute met for its monthly meeting in the ,Te Araroa Hotel last Saturday, 40 ; members being present. Mrs. Williamson, the president, presided, and : the meeting was opened with the inj stitute song. It was decided that the j institute should take in hand the '. training of the school children in singiiug Christinas eaTols, to be given in the second week in December. Miss ? Halliwell gave a demonstration of j tatting. Much interest was manifested in the competition for the best j frock for an adult or a girl up to 13 j years of age, and tho frock to cost no j more than Gs. There were 15 entries ; and Mrs. H. C. Williamson was awarded the first prize and Mrs. Fairbrother tho second. During the afternoon Mrs. Fairbrother sang “The Gift.’’ Several new members woro enrolled. Afternoon tea was provided by the president and) others. , A party of six, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Kohcre, Mrs. C. Goldsmith, Mrs. D. Turei, the Rev. P. M. Kohore and Mr. T. Goldsmith returned on Thursday after a delightful visit to tho Bay of Plenty. The party rode on horseback as far as Raukokore, then drove as far as Whitiauga, a few miles beyond Oniaio. Tho members speak with enthusiasm of the beautiful scenery from Capo Runaway to Whitianga. With occasional gaps the whole route is lined with pohutukawa. Ffom the Raukokore River to Opotiki ‘ the roads are all metalled. J Otako, tho historic pohutukawa on 'tho East Cape side of Te Araroa, has a reputation for early flowering. In the second week .in November it had quite a number of flowers and Mr. R. T. Kohore says that during his visit to tho Bay of Plenty, the land of tho pohutukawa, he did not see another pohutukawa with so many flowers, i The beach at Cape Runaway for | several weeks has b'ccn strewn with ! black fish and the stench has been unbearable. Sixty fish were counted. 1 During October 10 ships worked at 1 the port of Hicks Bay, discharging 56 [tons of cargo and lifting 149 tons. Receipts amounted to £59 7s lOd, and the expenditure to £99 Is 7d, returning a debit balaneo of £39 13s • 9d. Payment for interest increased tho expenditure. When reference was made at a meeting of the Matakaoa County Council to Sir Apirana Ngata’s native land development scheme in the Bay of Plenty, Cr. Kohore said that whatever faults might be found in tho Native Minister’s scheme, practically all the flat lands from Omnio to Cape Runaway have been cleared of scrub and rubbish and fenced in and the picture was a very pleasing one indeed._ Exception had been taken to reclaiming poor land at Capo Runaway, but Cr. Kohero mentioned that operations at Capo Runaway were only a minor part of the scheme, and tho poor hilly country, he thought, would not bo touched. Councillors admitted that Sir Apirana Ngata was doing good m spending money on productive work.
