Cars Cross Deserts
A HOLIDAY motor trip across four famous deserts from Accra, West Africa, to London, has .just been accomplished by Mr. Raymond Nichols, chief Government transport officer of the Gold Coast, and his wife.. It is claimed to be ihe-'lirst automobile crossing of Africa from west to east, and Dr. Nancy Nichols is said to be the first woman to traverse the. southern Sahara, Nubian, Libyan and Sinai deserts, across which their route lay. During this KSOO-nvile. section of their trip, water, food and petrol enough for three weeks had to be carried ;.on trailers behind the two cars Which , comprised ‘the party. , The adventure was Mr. Nichols’ idea of -how to , spend a holiday, and it took up most, of his six months’ leave. He has successfully acqomplisbcd other long and arduous motor journeys,- including a 7000-ldlomcl re crossing of South America and tho Andes.; . t \ .; His next big trip, he hopes, will be through Algeria and Morocco.
