Avoiding Plug Trouble
jl/lOST spark plug trouble is caused by 7; ■ using a type of plug not suited to the requirements of the,, engine. This, depends on the internal temperatures developed, and consequently,, communicated to the plug. The aim of the plug designer is to ensure .that interna,! parts of the plug shall keep hot enough to bo sol 1 -cleaning, but remain sufficiently cool to guard against any risk of pre-ignition. The design therefore is a. com premise between extremes, and a type suitable for a low-compression engine developing only.low internal temperatures will not, function correctly in a highcompression. high-speed engine, because it will overheat. In the reverse case the plug would not become sufficiently hot, and would soon, fail owing to oil condensation. Plug manufacturers now produce a considerable range, and the choice of the buyer should be made entirely from the chart of recommendations.
