PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN DETROIT’S RECEPTION NEW YORK, Oct. 22. At Detroit, Mr. Hoover carried his plea for re-election into the centre of the heavily depressed automobile industry to-night in the third speech of his campaign, in which he listed “ten sure signs of economic recovery, ’ including increased gold hoardings, currency circulation. freight car loadings and other business activities. In perhaps the most pointed words yet uttered, he assailed Mr. Roosevelt’s “destructive Democratic programme,” and specifically charged him with misrepresentation of the Republican fiscal legislation and with offering, by inference, Federal employment to 10,000,000 unemployed. His arrival in the city was marred by the first hostile demonstration of the campaign thus far. A large group of Communist sympathisers gathered at the station, hurled jeers and carried banners denouncing him, examples being “He engineered 15,000,000 out of work,” and “Hoover murdered the bonus marchers. Down with Hoover.” The Presidential party kept to their railway carriages for 25 minutes while the police cleared an area. Sporadic heckling continued until his arrival in the Olympia area, where he was given a loud ovation. As liis special train crossed Ohio to-day Mr. Hoover delivered brief addresses from the rear platform at numerous halts.
