RECOVERY IN BRITAIN
SIGNS OF PROGRESS CHANCELLOR OPTIMISTIC LONDON, Oct. 22. Mr. Neville Chamberlain at Birmingham said: “Signs of solid progress towards recovery are now plainer than at any time since the Government took office. The rising tide of unemployment is apparently stemmed and might soon set in the opposite direction. The Government and the local authorities have been spending too much in relation to the reserves of the only people from whom money is obtainable. Private individuals should consider their personal circumstances and spend if they can afford to do so. It is a mistake to suppose that keeping money back is a public service.”
