TERRIFIC HAIL STORM
TRAIN BADLY BATTERED DAMAGE IN QUEENSLAND BRISBANE, October 9. A terrific hail storm which swept over the Nudgee district shortly alter 9 o’clock on Saturday night caused damage to property. The Sandgate-Brisbane train, which ran into the storm near Nudgee railway station, presented a battered appearance as it steamed into the central railway station half an hour later. In relating his experience, a passenger stated: —“I heard the hail hitting the roof of the carriage, but I was not alarmed until one of the widows broke and a piece of glass stuck in my hat.I was moving away when another window smashed, and hail, some of it as big as my fist, flew past me. I ducked under-the seat, and only came out a few minutes ago.” ' t , _ . At the School of Arts, Nudgee Beach, where a concert was in progress, a- mild panic resulted. More than 80 panes of class crashed into the building, and m the rush for shelter from the hailstones which hurtled into the hall six women fainted. The building was badly wrecked. . The damage to grape crops in Nudgee district is estimated at several thousands of pounds. A number of the larger vineyards, the crops of which were well advanced, were severely lashed by the storm.
