ROWING
POVERTY BAY CLUB The final of the First Trial Fours series conducted by tho Poverty Bay Rowing Club was rowed on the Taruberu river l on Saturday evening. Trophies donated by Mr. J. Bradley were allotted to this event. The competing crews were R. Stevenson (stroke), S. Frank, J. Randle, .and G. Ardern, and T. Hill (stroke). W. Cochrane, J. Green, . and E. Bacon. From a fast start Stevenson gained a slight advantage in the first half-a-dozen strokes, but Hill quickly pulled his crew together, and at the footbridge both boats were level. After passing under the footbridge the crews raced together lor a; short distance, but by steady rowing Hill began to creep ahead, and when Derby street was reached had a lead of easily half-a-length. At this stage both crews sprinted, Stevenson making a most determined effort to reduce the gap, but Ujll-maintained his lead, and when nearibg the finish quickened up still further and forged past the post with a length of clear water between the boats, earning a well deserved win.
