UMPIRE IN QUANDARY

UNIQUE CRICKET INCIDENT A rather unique incident occurred during Ilie progress of it cricket match in a country centre in England recently. The only respectable ball in the possession of the teams had been lost tin thick jungle adjoining the ground; and so one which had seen much better days was requisitioned. A few minutes later the batsman gave ,a vigorous smite and skied the bail, which parted asunder, the cover being caught; by point and the inside portion of the ball by slip. The poser for the umpire was whether lie should give the batsman out, and, if so, was the batsman caught by point or slip, or would he have been not out if either fieldsman had dropped his portion of the ball? The umpire, who happened to be a minister of the local church, gave his decision ins “As you were.’’ He wisely decided to cancel the whole ’performance and jjssist in the hunt for the good ball which had been lost.
