Fire was noticed by a sentry in a building opposite the barracks al Maidstone at midnight. Soldiers helped the Fire Brigade, the chief officer of which ascended a ladder to the upper storey, smashed a window, entered a bedroom, and discovered George James, 'l7, his wife, 45, their daughter, I.'!, and son, 5, asphyxiated.
