CONTENTIOUS MEASURE
EDUCATION BILL DEFEAT OF LABOR GOVERNMENT (British Official Wireless.) Bee. noon. RFGBY, .lanuarv 21. in the House of Commons to-night the Gov eminent was defeated in a division on the report stage of the Ldueutiou .Hill for raising the school leaving age. The bill has met opposition from groups in till parties on tho, question of the State aid to lie given to the non-provided section oi schools to enable them to fulfil the programme of building and stalling involved. A series of conferences to reach a settlement was held by the Education mister during the recess, but proved abortive. The division took place on an amendment moved by Mr. J. Scurr, a Catholic Labor i nbor, to suspend the operation of the Act pending arrangement for such, and resulted in the (! overrun I'll I being defeated by 282 votes to 24i>. Questioned by Mr. Stanley Baldwin whether the bill would be proceeded with to-night, the .Prime. Minister, Mr. Ramsay .Mae Donald, said no. The principle was all involved in the division and he hoped the House would proceed. A motion to adjourn the House, moved from the Conservative benches, was not pressed to a division.
