BRIGHTER BUSINESS

MONEY SPENT FREELY HANDLING- TO-NIGHT’S CROWD Those who have not been directly hit by the prevailing circumstances appear to be spending freely, according to observations made by Gisborne businessmen to-day. A noticeable feature is that while most townspeople appear to be spending as usual, those from the country have had to exercise many economies, and in proportion to their spending power of recent years the amount of money distributed by them during the present pre-Christ-mas period is smaller than usual. However, most shopkeepers are report* ing very satisfactory business under the circumstances. The past few days have been busy ones, with the staffs fully employed, while to-day large crowds were in town making their final purchases.

It is inevitable that the returns of most businessmen are less than for the corresponding period last year, when people generally had more money to spend. The proportion of decrease, however, should not be so great when the final figures are made up as many people a month ago imagined would be the ease. In fact, the head of one of the larger firms of the town reports an increase for the mouth to date compared with December last year. In this case, however, the firm has been assisted by considerably larger premises, which permit of the goods being displayed to much better advantage and so assisting in the turn-over to no small extent.

In order to cater for the large crowds expected in town to-night, all vehicular traffic will be suspended in Gladstone road between the post office and Grey street between b p.m. and 10 p.m. It will bo well for motorists to take note of the time the restriction is to take effect, for last year a few became hopelessly mixed up in the''crowd at one of the intersections.
