WHEN DOCTORS CONFER

THE B.M.A. CONFERENCE GISBORNE TO ENTERTAIN / l ABOUT 100 DELEGATES EXPECTED For the first time in its history, Gisborne will be the scene of the annual conference of the New Zealand oranch of the British Medical Association early r.ext year, commencing on February 24, and concluding on February 28. It is expected that from 80 to 100 delegates will attend. The Gisborne division of the associa. tion is making preparations for tho event, which will be, one of utmost importance to the town and district quite apart from the medical profession. Very few r of the doctors in other parts of the Dominion, it is claimed, have any knowledge of Gisborne, and this will be a splendid opportunity for medical men and others in Gisborne to make a good impression on men of the profession from other parts of the country. In addition to several prominent New Zealand doctors expected at the conference, will he Professor Marshall Allan, Professor of Obstetrics at Melbourne University. Dr. Bright Bannister, of London, a. promient obstetrician, was to have provided two of the addresses, but as lie is unable to come Professor Marshall Allan will fill his place. Dr. Swift, of Seattle, IJ.S.A., was to have been another overseas visitor, but recent information indicates his inabiitv to attend. He was to have given an address on epilepsy on the first day of the conference proper, and so far no arrange ments have been made to fill his place.

THE SOCIAL ROUND The first of the visitors is expected on Sunday, February 22, and on the Tuesday evening in the Opera House a civic reception is to he tendered, addresses of welcome to include those from the Mayor and Sir Apirana Ngata Later, at the City Hall, the Gisborne division of the association will entertain the visitors at a social evening. The conference will commence next day in tlie Y.M.C.A. hall, concluding on Sat urday morning with the annual general meeting, and the departure of the visitors for Waikaremoana.

Throughout the conference there will be a round of social attractions, but nothing definite has been decided by the loc-al division of the association apart from the reception on the Tuesday evening. It has been suggested, that the second night should be devoted to a- concert, cabaret or a ball, the third night to a dinner, while for the final night it has been suggested that a Maori entertainment should be held under floodlights on Makarori beach. Widespread interest is reported throughout the Dominion in respect of the conference in Gisborne, and, included in the 80 to 100 visitors expected there should be a good representation from as far south as Dnneduj, while many are expected from Wellington.
