A DUTY DELEGATED
DOMINIONS SECRETARY “GET ME OUT OF THIS—HOLE” LONDON, Nov. 3. Explaining why he, instead of Air. J. H. Ihoinas, proposed the toast of the chairman. Mr. te-Water, at the South African dinner to General, Hertzog and Messrs. Havengn and Fonrie, at which Prince George was present, Mr. L. S. Amery, former Secretary of the Dominions, said he had just received a pencil note signed, “Jimmy,” reading: “Dear Old Boy,—Do get me out of this —— hole. You know I take a free dinner anywhere at the call of duty. It isn’t the conference that keeps me away. TheyTl stami another of my after-dinner speeches without basting up the conference, but last time l went to South Africa, my colleagues got into an (expurgated) mess. If I attended the dinner I fear they would do something that .would put you in my place before breakfast. You love our country too well; therefore say what I think about Mr. te-Wat-er. I'll look after Ramsay and Philip.”
