NEXT SEASON'S ROSTER

GISBORNE'S PROSPECTS SHEEPOWNERS' PROPOSAL Although the roster for next wool selling season has been announced, it is considered by members of the Poverty Bay and East Co:r-t Sheepowners' Union that there is a possibility of Gisborne becoming a woolselling centre. Brief remarks made at the annual mooting on Saturday afternoon indicated that there was a possibility of wool being valued ar. one centre and sold at another, and it was decided that the executive be recommended to keep the matter in view with the idea of taking action if advisable.

In bringing the matter forward Mr. Y. Barker said there would be an accumulation of wool to dispose of next season, when both this season's holdover and the new clip would be available. In addition, buyers were considering a new system of valuing wool in one centre and selling it in another. He did not consider the prospects of holding wool sales in Gisborne were hopeless, and, in fact, they were brighter than ever before. He had made inquiries among buyers, his opinion being the result of information he had gathered. He moved that it be a recommendation to the cxecutivo to keep the matter in view in order to see what could be done. Mr. C. H. Williams, in seconding Mr. Barker's motion, said the union should thank Mr. Barker for the interest he had taken in the matter, and for the inquiries he had initiated. The motion was carried unanimously without further discussion. ' BROKERS SYMPATHETIC MOVE COMES AS SURPRISE When Mir. Barker's comments were referred to leading Gisborne brokers this morning they were surprised that they had heard nothing of any such move being afoot. Gisborne had made its usual application to the wool committee for inclusion in next season's roster, but it had met the fate of such applications in the past. It was evident that local brokers were most sympathetic towards Mr. Barker's suggestion, and they said they would be only too willing to'give what assistance they could in bringing about any change that would benefit Gisborne "and tne glowers of the district. There would 'be no section of the trade more pleased than the Gisborne brokers if sales were held here.

It was agreed that a large proportion of the season's Poverty Bay clip had been held over, as well as many thousands of bales in other centres, but if Mr. Barker was relying on the possibility of congestion at the wool stores in Napier to give Gisborne a sale, it was pointed out that a great deal would depend on the manner in which the early sales went whether there would be any congestion in Napier or not. No figures of the amount of wool held over could be given yet, and the brokers were not prepared to say that it would be half of the clip as was suggested to a reporter from another quarter. It was known that some of the Gisborne wool was being held on the farms and a comparatively small quantity in stores in town, but the bulk of* th'» holdings weje at Napier. If the November, catalogue at Napier was a large one the bulk of the holdings there might be cleared, preventing congestion in the stores, but- on the other band if the growers held back as was the case for the season just over, the congestion at the Napier stores might be in favor of holding wool sales in Gisborne. However, they had no information on the position at present, but they gave an assurance that they would do all possible to help the Sheepowners' Union in its efforts to secure the offering of wool in Gisborne and to obtain any information that might be of value to help in this direction.
