The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe left Christchurch this morning for Dunedin P.A.
After 40 years of service in church work, including nearly four years in the front line trenches along the French frontier, during which period he earned tho title of “The Singing Padre.” the Rev. Arthur Mitchell, of Auckland, is to retire from active work.
The appointment of Mr. R. Girling Butcher as chief inspector of explosives was announced last night by the Public Service Commissioner. The position was previously held by the Dominion Analyst, Dr. •). S. MaeLauriii, who retired last week. For some time past Mr. Girling Butcher has been deputy ■ liief inspector of explosives.-
Lady Baden Powell bad a conference with Sir Alfred Piekford and Colonel Walton, Overseas Commissioners, concerning the itinerary of the, tour of Australia, and New Zealand by Lord Baden Powell and herself. I.he date ni departure was fixed for January 16. It is understood the official programmes were curtailed with the object of allowing Lord and Lady Baden Powell to enjoy a bush holiday. Mr. L. -J. Schmitt, who was recently appointed New Zealand Trade and tourist Commissioner to Australia, was a, visitor to Napier oil Tuesday, when lie took the opportunity of meeting many business men. and later addressed the executive of the Napier Chamber of Commerce on “Trans-Tasman ’J rade and Tourist Traffic,” explaining what he hoped to achieve in iosteringi trade and tourist traffic between the two countries.
