ACCLIMATISATION

WAIAPU SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING Held in the Masonic Hall, Tokomaru Bay, on Monday evening, and attended by 20 members from all parts of the district from Te Araroa. to Tolaga Hay, the annual meeting of the Waiupu Acclimatisation Society was the. scene of some interesting discussions on various phases of the society's activities. Mr. Ralph Kemp was m the chair. The balance-sheet and annual report were adopted. Sumo discussion took place concerning an item of £2B 2s. royalty from opossum skins, of which IQQO had been stamped at Tolaga Ray. MY. Judge raised the question of licenses which had been issued in Gisborne for trapping in this district, and also fines, which, ho contended, should have come to the society: if was resolved that it be a recommendation to the incoming council that tho question of trapping licenses and fees be enquired into. Mr. Harris, Tolaga Ray, said there was now a certain amount of money available which should be spent on stocking up with game. In the event of the society being unable to supervise this work in the Uawa County, the Rod and Gun Club there was prepared to undertake the work. It was resolved to again write to the Minister of Internal Affairs, with a request that'hares be treated as game. / It was deeided To offer 6d per pair for hawks' feet, and on tho motion of Mr. AY". Gates it was resolved to allocate £2O for the purpose. Referring to last year's recommendations, it was resolved to reaffirm that relative to a reward of £5 for information leading to the conviction of poachers. - 'Tho holding of more frequent meetings of the 'council was advocated, ami it was agreed that four or six meetings should he held during tho year. It was decided to hold the first meeting of tho council on Monday, April 28. On the suggestion of Mr. Higgs, it was resolved that an "early inquiry ho lnddo regarding) pheasants for restocking. Mr. Judge entered an objection to the distribution of birds, as at present, on the basis of licenses issued. Whilst admitting that Tolaga. Bay Rod and Gun Out) had done fine work' iii distributing birds, spending its own money. ho thought tho fresh birds should lie distributed on the basis of district needs, rather than on the'number of: licenses. Ho said sheep and pheasants did not agree, the latter doing better on rougher feed, on cattle, or cultivated, country.
