SECOND EDITION WAIKOHU COUNTY

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The Waikoliu County Council met today, there being present: Cr. A. A. Fraser, chairman, TVs. G. 11. Morice, C. Gaukrodger, H. 11. A. Doild, d. Hope, and M. Doyle. Leave of absence was granted Cr. H. J. F. Tombieson. Messrs. 11. G. Hooper and J. Geary, roadmen, applied for an increase in the rate of horse hire, at present 5s a day, to cover the increase, in the cost ol horse feed.—lt was decided to fix the rate according to the price of feed, and also to pay the carriage, the new payments to be made also concerning the stocks in hand.

Mr. S. Swat-brick, of Qtoko, referring to the subsidy of £200; ill for ill, for the metalling of the Mukaretu road, presumed that the, council would have to spend i!400 on tlie mad, but a metalling contract had been lei for only £206, leaving a balance of £134. The chairman of the Main Highways Board advised that the council's application for increased subsidy for maintenance would receive consideration. - Received.

The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote requesting payment of the council’s contribution towards tlio cost of erecting Rutledge’s bridge.— Agreed to. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote asking if the council had any suggestion to make re unemployment relief works to lie undertaken during the coming winter. —It was decided to reply that the only suitable work was that already referred to the department, the formation of Olliver road.

The engineer was authorised to pur chase another tractor grader.

Accounts totalling £5947 were passed for payment. The county clerk, Mr. J. G. Appleton, said that the credit in the general account was likely to be about £2OOO more than last year, but some of the riding balances may be smaller. Dunsliea, £l3/ 17s 6d.
