THE SOCCER CODE

P.B. ASSOCIATION THE ANNUAL MEETING The position of the soccer code was discussed at. the annual meeting of tho Poverty Bay Football Asosciation held last evening, when Mr. .). .1. MacDonald presided over an attendance •comprising about JO enthusiasts. It was agreed that the officers for the new year would be faced with a hard task in organising the competitions and in extending the influence of Hie game, .but this ra.sk was faced with optimism. ,

In it lie early stages of the meeting the chairman read a letter from .Mr. J. R. Kirk, last year’s president of the association, in which Mr. Kirk intimated his intention to retire from the post, owing to his absence from New Zealand, but wished the officers of the association much joy in their selfimposed task of promoting the game in Poverty Bay. The letter eoneluded with the hope that the season, the association, and the players would experience the best of fortune.

A diminution of interest towards the close of last season’s competition Was commented upon in the annual report submitted to the meeting, the text of this report being as under: “Unfortunately for our competition the four teams entered at the commencement of the season did not fully fulfil their part of the contract, and naturally this tended to diminish the interest which would otherwise have resulted. During the season a Saturday senior League .competition was conducted, which was won by Rangers

Football Club, the ,1. E. Kirk Charity Cup was won by Thistle, and the Kyne 'Cup by Rangers. Again we were unable to have the Thursday competition started, which deprived us of much-needed revenue.

“For the coming season wo have had the report, of only one club’s annual meeting, and therefore cannot say with certainty what the position is going to be. Our thanks are due to the referees who officiated during tko season and assisted materially in the carrying out of our programme; also to ihe members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, who attended and rendered players assistance when required. “The balance-sheet shows a protit for I lie year, which is gratifying considering the falling off towards the close of the season. The balance in the trust account in the Post Office stands at £-ld Os Ll.’’

Commenting on the report and balance sheet, the ehairm.in stilted that adverse (.'ii'cimistaiices hail .sheeted the game lasi season, but taking tilings all round, tin* position was better than might have been expected, lie addressed his thanks to all HH'lilhel s of the executive who had assisted him in carrying on tho work of the association, the so aviary and treasurer. Messrs. .1. Jlewilsoii and \Y. Home, being particularly worthy ol mention, having taken up their work at a critical time in the affairs of I lie association. The officers had done well throughout a difficult year, stated .Mr. MacDonald, and despite their difficulties tlm association was still able (e show a surplus. The assets were veined at £236 more than the total of their liabilities, pointed out the chairman, and the balance sheet could be regarded as a. highlv satisfactory one.

The report and balance sheet were discussed briefly, and adopted on the motion of Mr. A. Baker. The election of officers was proceeded with, resulting as tinder : Patron, Mr. lb W.
